The type 89 is a bit... old for this comic isint it? The JDF replaced its type 89s with the Howa type 20 in 2020 so a year before the series came out. The type 89 is kind of a shitty rifle as well so its a bit strange. I would've liked it better had he been equipped with an M4 but i guess thats only reserved for special forces (god knows why)

Type 20 hasn't replaced the Type 89 yet and won't for another 10-20 years, it's reserved for more special parts of the gsdf while the 89 is still widely issued and most of the force is familiar to. And the reason why only SF is equipped with the M4 is because it's expensive at the time of it's purchase and the SF needed a rifle that use underbarrel grenade launchers. There's also the preference for domestically produced guns

I was wondering what the hell was going on with these 30rd STANAG magazines. Apparently from what I can find out they are actually airsoft magazines.

I've only had American MRE's when taking shelter for a hurricane when I lived on a naval base as a kid. And I would not consider any of them delicious. Some are pretty good while others are very gross. It's really hit or miss. Can't say how it'd be for japanese rations.

Depends, I'm an aussie and our MRE's are actually really good. So good we have companies where you as a civilian can buy them and people will.

Depends on the country, Theres a few MRE guys on utube though that would have that answer.

Really though I don't believe that they'd find these that amazing? at least compared to their own food. I hate when settings make it out like middle ages food was not tasty.

Going by FPS common sense, I'm weirded out that he has no pistol lol. I'm excited to see what kind of pistol does he have after binge watching forgotten weapons on youtube lmao

so his bag is restocked every 24 hours? now tahts something i would test to the very limit, do i have to consume the MRI's or do they just have to not be in the bag to be restocked? do the ammo have to be spent? or can i just take out the mag's and they will be restocked? if so i would just take out the mag's and stockpile them outside the bag somewhere, perhaps eventually get a magic bag to put the mag and MRI's in so i can stockpile them, of course, the MC here wont do any of that, he wil exclusively rely on the limited stock of ammo he has in his bag with zero foresight that he might need more then what he has available in his bag and wont have the luxury to wait for it to restock.

Can only talk about my own country Sweden and my personal experience.
But I found the MRE I had to be fantastic,

Hell, the Type 64 is still in service with some units and in some places.

Even for America, this goes. The reason you started seeing stuff like MK14 EBRs and whatnot during GWoT is because those M14s from decades before were still in armories. You still had, especially armored units, still issuing M3A1s during Operation Desert Storm all the way until the late 1990s that were WW2 vintage to units/people because it was still in the armories and basically the best PDW that was available on the basically non-existent budget of PDWs for tankers.

Yeah but isint MC infantry? I dont know how it works overseas but the older issued rifles are typically only used for training purposes or given to non-combat MOS's

Type 89s are still being issued and used by what would be frontline combat units of the JGSDF.

In fact, here is a JGSDF soldier from just January of this year, 2024, in a joint Japanese-U.S. exercise with the USAF 36th Airlift Squadron.

The guy pictured here is part of the JGSDF 1st Airborne Brigade (the Narashino Airborne Brigade) which are one of Japan's premiere infantry combat brigades. Like, if anything happened that required combat mustering in Japan, these would be the first guys going in and they are a well-trained and prestigious unit.

From what I understand, they're like the equivalent of the 101st Airborne or 82nd Airborne stateside. And they're using issued Type 89s.

Some special forces units (like the Special Forces Group that is based alongside 1st Airborne, but is a different unit) or the Rangers get to play with extra special stuff or new things like the Type 20 or M4s, but they also have a specialized mission set.

Keep in mind, it took decades for the Type 89 to replace the Type 64. And that's despite the Type 64 being... well... lackluster to be frank. And the Type 89 is a perfectly serviceable rifle. Lack of rails and accessories and optic mounting for the most part, but it beats the hell out of the Type 64 (which couldn't even reliably cycle NATO-standard 7.62x51 from what I've read).

Thats wild, i guess it has something to do with foreign militaries not investing as much in defense spending thanks to US military oversight. I remember when i was in the marines i went from m16-m249-m4-m27 in the space of five years. Generally older weapons systems are saved for noncombat and training units while the infantry and combat related jobs get newer weapons platforms. Of course its the marines so its still not as good as what we should be getting.
