He is a soldier and is trained to go along, so maybe that's part of it. In the earlier chapters there are times when you see him relying on his military training on indoctrination. When a superior offers you something you're only answer is yes. When addressing a superior you should stand. Things like that are brought back in his memory as he decides what to do. He's not exactly officer material, but he is fully qualified as a non-com.

I don't say this to be disparaging. I am also not exactly leadership material myself and much prefer to do things that are assigned by others. People such as ourselves are the necessary component of any successful organization.

Bath on the second floor in a world where there is no indoor plumbing. I had once read that having your bath on one of the upper floors was in the design of wealthier houses because the family occupied the upper stories privately, while the ground floor was used for utilitarian purposes and for events involving the public or guests. In addition, it was an assertion of power to have one's servants carry buckets of hot water up to the baths.

I know that realistically it works but there's wasn't a single bit of explanation why they did it that way and that's the answer I'm looking for. It's weird how there's no monologues of reason on small details like this when the whole purpose of this chapter's half-end is that small detail itself
