I would say that Waku is in the running for greatest romance manga MMC ever.

He's new to all of this and he's a bit slow on the uptake sometimes but he doesn't let his own issues get in the way and he doesn't jump to any conclusions. He just takes the time to figure out what's going to be best for Oura, then that's what he does.

It likely helps though that a genuine smile from Oura is definitely a reward worth working for.

Probably the mother will be the main obstacle of the story and I might be wrong about the comment, but for now I wont choose the see her like that yet, this manga is not like that, hard to see a a hard villain being added to it
