His worries seem legitimate even if he's to this point been portrayed as a huge asshole. She's going to a school that's well below her actual ability because she wants to be around her man and live a normal high school life. Obviously that's her choice at the end of the day, but MC could potentially influence her to pursue greater academics and still get to be around him for the most part since she could go to school in Tokyo. I doubt that's what she'll end up doing but its not a baseless concern her brother has

Yeah - it's unfortunately a balance against the fact that you mentioned - he has been portrayed as a major asshole, and that instantly colors his request here in a poor light due to his established character.
The fact he relented on the Tokyo school option is really very surprising, because it's almost at odds with how he's been up to now.

The remaining issue, is that I do see MC simply deciding "oh, I am holding her back", and then just tells her to go to a better school. And she'll misinterpret that as him telling her off/calling their engagement which will cause her to spiral (for once, her being the one confused by the subtext).

Feels like a "Third Act Climax" sort of deal, honestly.

I realize that neither of their friends can be any more privy to Miyuki's actual feelings for the sake of the story--her being misunderstood and angst and junk--but how does one misinterpret 'it isn't necessary'?

There must be a tone thing going on too.
I haven't seen the raws, but at a guess, even in standard Japanese "iranai" means both "unnecessary" and "unwanted" — by way of parallel example, in the anime Kyousougiga there's a recurring event where the residents of a world without permanent death and destruction let go of things they don't need anymore, and a brief point of concern involves a parent attempting to throw out her child's stuffed toy even though it's definitely not unwanted.

@ tl, ive learnt through classes most of the time but renshuu (/or anki), wanikani and a pomodoro timer have been working pretty well so far when i self studied
if you want to spice word acquisition up you're definitely at the level where you can read some easy VNs with texthookers, r/VN has multiple guides and recommendations and jpdb.io has difficulty ratings for various japanese media
...it's mostly just grinding whatever SRS you have though, ngl. the mountain only gets bigger the more you learn in my experience (i'm only ~N2 so dont believe in me too much)
i'd recommend hellotalk/hinative if you have interest in speaking skills
there's usually places/events related to japanese culture within a decent drive of where you live, especially at local colleges
speaking of colleges, you can try and audit a class if you have the time/money, it should be decently cheap
there are also free online classes

She's a fucking high schooler dude, let her enjoy her youth how she wants. She can worry about greater academics in college. But it seems he never liked the Mc so he might as well split them apart while he's at it

Miyuki's family is from Kyoto which has the strictest etiquette and customs. Think American Southern manners or British middle class manners. The comedy does come from how the characters think Miyuki is acting like she would in Kyoto while Miyuki thinks she is acting like a Tokyoite.

"Peace of mind", not "mine".

"Show this with Grandpa" also doesn't really make sense, but I don't know the original meaning so I'm not sure how that would be corrected.
Should it be something like "share this with Grandpa" or "show this to Grandpa"?

The trope of the sibling unintentionally trying to make their sibling miserable is pure ragebait
