Even Canadian dads can’t escape Japanese salaryman culture

Sad beaver

I always love how much Japan waffles between "The world is just like Japan and everyone behaves in a way that is normal for Japan" and "Everything outside of Japan is some heathen, uncouth wild-land that lacks the subtle culture and grace that Japan naturally possesses and must be looked down on because they don't understand it even though it's so simple and obvious." (and to be fair, every culture does the latter to some degree. Though I do feel like Japan's fixation on people not getting their labyrinthine social etiquette is always a little bit weird because even they would admit that it's obtuse and difficult to learn as a native)

Like... in the same chapter everyone treats her like a weirdo because she's not 100% Japanese, but then fails to grasp a simple concept like "Japan's insistence that employees should value their jobs and companies over their own families without a second though is not a universal trait and is probably in the minority". You can't have it both ways.

But also very Japanese; as a culture, they tend to treat it like a club you'll never really be part of if you aren't from there.
And it's also not typically an insult, they often see it as protecting you: "they made a mistake, but it's not their fault our culture is just complicated." Which, you know, isnt always so flattering, especially in cases like these lol, but the heart is often in the right place.

My high school Japanese teacher described it as Japan putting foreigners in the same category as babies and drunks when it comes to forgiving social faux pas, which definitely fits the attitude being discussed.

In most scenarios I'd say a change away from a proper font to Wild Words is a downgrade. It's a perfectly fine font, but since it's so widely used, it lacks character and automatically adds blandness.
(I say this as someone who uses WW.)

This hit an another level, it's so easy to slip into an outside faction and be treated like you have no agency. Perception is important.

For reference, I'm a high functioning druggy. I take nearly every kind of drug besides opiates. Believe me when I say I regulate all my substance use and the only thing I'm addicted to is the milk they add extra cream to, that shit is the devil.

As soon as someone knows I take drugs I'm put in the invalid basket. My mistakes are excused instead of corrected, my opinion gets automatically disregarded and people think I'm poor or can't make rational choices with money. So much damn stigma when I'm usually better than them in every measurable metric.

It sucks especially when their reason is that they're trying to help you as even if they are, it still based in prejudice.
