It pretty much stays as a fluffy comedy for all 5 volumes, though the volume with the most drama is #4, which is Karen's volume(the volumes tend to focus on a different girl by giving their backstory along with having an issue involving Saigi, though Maka is ever-present in all of them).

For the record, here's how the volumes shake out: 1/Maka, 2/Nui, 3/Muku, 4/Karen, and 5/Miharu(somewhat)

As for your other question: At the end of volume 5, they have a talk and basically, Makoto seeing through her "Unobtainable Flower" act is why she fell for him along with her being able to do things that she never allowed herself to do during her school years(dating/being a girlfriend, flirting, being girly in general).

And yeah, it's still ongoing, just waiting for volume 6.

@ss4chris She'll break up with him, resign as a teacher, and possibly become a nun at the same cloister that Karen's a part of. It's because she feels that him accepting would mean that she failed as a teacher(her reasoning, lol).
