The mechanism is not explained in details anyway, so the barrier function more as a plot device to keep them isolated in the school and keep outside party out, rather than a piece of mystery to crack. The main deal of the story is the human relationship between everyone trapped inside.

Man, her arc, especially this chapter, is really depressing. That feeling of being useless is real. What makes this the worst is that everyone is in on "bullying" her just to make her join his harem.
