Gakuto is the little girl's first crush. He's a Mature Older Guy (to her) who didn't outright treat her as a little kid and she took care of him. That was enough to flip her puppy love switch. She'll grow out of it.

Didn't any guys crush their cute 4th grade teacher for even fewer reasons?

I guess I can see the "crush on an older guy" thing, but I also think that most people in that situation would be too shy to actually do anything, and definitely wouldn't be pushing for a kiss.

But also I barely remember my grade 4 years, so maybe I'm wrong.
