The calfs temperature would be worrying for a human, but cows have much higher body temps than humans. While humans have a body temp of 36-37 C (around 36 for me), cows normally have a body temp of 38-39 C. So the calf being just over 40 would be like a human measuring 38 C or just over. No big deal unless you are a manga character.
