Damn it we missed the open to get the masterminds name !
But I'm still with my theory: Nishina is too suspect to be the Mastermind! Ashley was probably saved/killed by a priest which would lead is to this situation

Also, what if the masterminds is the teacher (do we have any info on that?) ? Someone in the same class but can't interaction with everyone?

In English you can use the singular they/them when gender is unspecified. People have been doing that at least since the time of Shakespear.
