For those of use who are poor at rote memorization, what's needed is to show how it is used in the real world.
Make it practical. Make it relevant. And, if possible, make it fun.
Because, then it isn't just memorizing by rote, there's a reason to know it.
It's useful. You can do things with it that you couldn't otherwise, or only with great difficulty.
But if that isn't shown, then it's just stupid stuff that you are being forced to do for no good reason, or at least that's how it feels.

Or, at least unaware of his emotions.
OK, we already knew he didn't have much contact with his emotions.
Or... it's that well educated though he is, there are areas where his knowledge is zilch.
The reality is that he really is totally clueless in certain areas.
I can sympathize; I was like that myself. I suspect I still am, to a certain extent.
