1. People love their ancestral home, this is why some didn't flee to the new world in the past (and some were unwillingly forced out).

2. He's the lord, those people who fled are his people, people he cares about as a lord, them losing their homes when he could save their home is the lowest thing a lord can do.

3. The curse is only contained on the land, there's no guarantee it won't spread if the mc doesn't get rid of it and by that point it would be too late.

Because refugees always have it super easy. Especially when their wealth is tied up almost entirely in the land they owned in bumfuck nowhere, and they have to leave with like just the clothes on their back and what personal items of worth they can carry with them.
