Not the initial path, no, but Reiji confessing his feelings to Nagi by some means was likely intended from the very beginning.

Also due to the circumstances, this is probably the best thing Reiji could have said to Nagi, especially considering what Esemori said to him a few chapters back. I don't think it's soap operay, if anything, it's the opposite in my opinion.

I dont mean "soap opera=y" in a bad way necessarily. More just it started out as a pretty damn solid and grounded drama and its sorta.. found its way to being a lil overboard on the melodrama and all. Its still good I like this manga a lot

His life prior to meet Nagi tho.

Lets remember:

He was the errand boy of his family and Gen (who also bullied him), and Yuko made him the man of the house considering Kazumasa was a (fake) hikikomori and granny has (although she was faking it too) dementia. So, yeah, his life sucked dick, his only clutch to life was Chako, but she had her own agenda and was gonna leave him behind nevertheless.

He has rights to say his life was worthless. Before starting to interact with Nagi, he already was thinking into dying during his sleep that same night lmao. It's funny to think what would have happened if Nagi wasn't present: either Reiji ended up marrying Yuri sometime (her virginity and late bloomer issues she brought herself for wanting to be the very best like no one ever was were gonna explode in her face whether Nagi was introduced in the equation or not) or killing himself with his mom once he reaches adult age as she intended since the moment she had him.
