If you are actually trying to lead an army, psychos are indeed unnecessary as underlings. They would be a huge weakness that could ruin operations by only following their own desires and obsessions, ignoring all plans and purposes. They might occasionally be a great success in a single battle, but a single battle is not the same as the whole war. Not to mention they would demoralise their own side as well, causing systematic damage with long repercussions.
