16 chapters in and I still am not understanding a thing. Why is the Su family arrested?

"The Su family claim there isn't a single official they can turn to in order to prove their innocence"
"Even if the Su family are proven innocent they must still die"

The Chinese imperial government was so corrupt that this is how they portray themselves in their own fiction, they truly deserved the century of humiliation

They were accused of smuggling salt, that was explained in the 1st chapter, though in the 1st chapter it made it sound like they were guilty and later chapters make it sound like they aren't, might be a translation issue, might be a localisation issue.

The wording does seem a bit weird, but she seems to refer to Su Changqing specifically at the end there. And in all fairness, he has caused some serious havoc with his interference in the trial. Whether it constitutes a death sentence is another matter entirely, but at least there is some thread of logic there.

Also calling it now, "Su Changqing" will die, but "Zhou Jinyue" will live. I mean the emperor is clearly intelligent, so I wouldn't put it past her to have figured it all out already, and for his "execution" to be staged as a way to make their arrangement permanent by officially killing off his old identity.
