I feel that this is Chi's one-sided crush, and Ren sees her as his sister-- maybe he's just surprised because she normally doesn't give praise so straightforwardly. Plus this manga is so wholesome, the idea of a high schooler with someone who's past college age doesn't mesh!! I could be wrong though. Then again, Ruri x Kai (<3) kinda seem to have that age gap...?
