In the original, the moral is probably to see through appearances: sure, the princess is beautiful, but she's also vain and shallow, and in exchange for some pretty objects, she loses the respect and the love of the prince. Here, both points of view are explored, the characters talk with each other, and we understand why they acted that way. They're both at fault, they're both flawed, but in the end they can forgive each other and fall in love truly. It's a pretty realistic approach and, once again, I think it works.
