So the butterflies represent both life and death, at least according to Shinri. Interesting how Rikka doesn't seem to think they're needed. I'd have thought her religion would make her agree more with him, since their group was against the butterfly storage for a long time, but who knows. Can't wait until they finally start explaining all the hints being dropped.

I'm guessing that the butterflies will lead to some sort of Human Instrumentality Project and Rikka's group believes that it would be the next step for humans while Scar's group thinks it will mean the end of humanity as we know it.
