I feel like they're innocent in the sense that all he really wants is affection like the head pat (not anything lewd, necessarily). The head pat, by itself, made him really happy. To the point where he'd be willing to spend the little pocket money he has on re-experiencing it (instead of saving up for a snack or luxury items).
