That was a wonderful first page.

Also, stop trying to get her to eat bugs already girl. Can't you find any plant-based snacks or something for her?

I don't care how high the population gets - I will never eat insects. I'd sooner get my protein by killing and eating the guys who can still afford beef. I'll probably give this manga a second chance, but chapter 8 is going to have to be pretty spectacular to get me to forgive the author for acting like this is somehow okay.

Just an FYI that population alarmism is vastly overblown as being a thing. That said, entomophagy isn't weird and it's a very good source of protein. Cricket protein bars can be found on Amazon right now if you wanted to try some.

The only thing I'm disappointed by with this chapter is that they didn't bring up that a lot currently existing products already have insect parts in them. If you ever shiny candy, the shine comes from smashed up beetle shells. (shellac)

@MidnighTea:

The trending argument for eating bugs that I'm aware of have a lot more to do with global warming than overpopulation per se (which are two very different things, even if in cases like this they share some common ground).

But, realistically, I doubt that (recognizable) bugs will become ubiquitous in western diet anytime soon for cultural reasons (I tried a cricket once that had been cooked with lemon and pepper—I went to an odd enough university that this was in the cafeteria one night—it tasted like crickets smell, not a pleasant experience. I imagine things can be done about the taste but it doesn't seem easy to work with); I kind of expect lab-grown meat to be a more likely saviour in that realm a few decades from now.

@GravityTaxes:

You say this as if the author actively advocated for eating bugs instead of having a mantis say, "this shit is great," for comedic effect. Although after glancing at the author's twitter I do wonder if there is some weird activism mixed up in here or not? Dunno.

If reincarnation exists I hope I don't get born into a future where there are too many people that we can't produce enough food and keep our planet alive.

I imagine food made out of insects isn’t too bad. As long as it’s prepped right I probably wouldn’t be able to tell.
The icky factor seems to come from imagining the bugs on the ground being the same ones I would eat. But it’s not like I go around grabbing free roaming chickens, run them under some water, and then go to town.

Eating insects is generally seen as a pretty disgusting thing, especially in the western world...but what if it became more necessary and more of a norm? Things like cricket flour and mealworms are becoming more popular as a great source of protein. Would you give this kind of diet a go or is it a step too far?

Locusts as a Japanese delicacy (although the times I saw it in manga, some characters saw it as gross). 🐞🐞🐞

If anyone wants to know something fun, a fairly large spider crawled into a soda of mine one night. I was eating popcorn and watching a movie.

I ate some popcorn, drank the soda, and though I got a sharp husk stuck in the back of my throat... so went to chew it...
the moment it burst like a gusher I knew instinctively what the hell it was.

yea... not real taste exactly, soda and popcorn overpowered it, but texture... it was like a gusher popped.

with that said, you know almost all food has a known and acceptable amount of rat shit in it?

while I likely won't eat bugs knowingly, we do eat things like lobsters and shrimp, and that crap is already more or less bugs, just smells a hell of alot worse.
