Valeria is a valuable friend to our main protagonist and the love interest to his rival. Unfortunately for her, tragedy is a common trope on Greco-Roman stories and she was not the exception when her friends failed to save her from a mob of angry slaves (Volume 4)
As for Kaldan of Numidia, he really felt like the hero of another story trying to earn his freedom and he had the moxie to become a new mentor to Cestus other than Zafar. Alas, as the saying among gladiators goes ("Hail, we who are about to die salute you"), his death on the arena at the hands of a master fighter came perhaps too soon (Volume 7)
