This checkmate is the legal trap arising from the Philidor Defense, where the queen is sacrificed for a matte by minor pieces. Also, for those unaware, this manga is based on CDawgVA chess experience which he talks about in the trash taste podcast along with Gigguk and Theanimeman. They even did a chess tournament arc.

Connor is going to meet the girl who pushed him to the corner in the tournament arc and forced him to drag out the game and ending up in the draw. that was the coolest save ever. though it was pretty sad since the girl actually ending up telling her backstory and how much she trained for the match and end up getting a draw while she's in advantage
