While he may not be a bad guy himself, I kinda have to agree with him that he was not a good family man. To take off for a year or more at a time seems crazy. How do you maintain a relationship with your wife like that? How could you possibly bond with your kids? Especially after his wife's death, though I sympathize with his grieving, abandoning his kid for 2 years is still wrong. That's when his child needed him most. We still haven't fully explored his circumstances, but even he's indicating that he prioritized his work over his family. If that's the kind of job he chose to stick with, it'd honestly would have been better for him to remain single. If he wanted a family, then you would hope he would do his best to make adjustments or set arrangements so he could actually be there for them.

Though it is good he's making efforts now. It's easy to criticize after the fact but sometimes stuff isn't always as clear at the time.

The end page there really hit the feels honestly, seeing the father slowly but surely understand his son is really heart-warming.
