I much prefer this to the author running out of ideas, introducing a billion one-dimensional side characters and dragging the story on until the manga ends up being loathed by everyone like Komi-san.

I agree, I would rather have quality over quantity but as a reader two volumes doesn't feel like the dynamic has been fully explored. Right now formula is study->lewd->doubt->half-way communicate->more lewd and this is all just in the classroom. You could almost repeat this whole arc from 1 step past the beginning in a library, then again at someone's home. Make the yearning more because someone is always home and they can't be alone which should be fine since they are studying but isn't really fine or are almost caught during "oxytocin time"
