Who knows about the mom, but I'd like to think he didn't because he has got strength of character! He knows he did a good thing, so he felt no need for explanations or excuses. The mother has every right to be annoyed about the lost pair of sandals, god knows she has a lot to worry about with five sons, but for Shirou it was worth the sacrifice. If he made excuses now, it would cheapen the value of his decision to help her.
