I would say there are some improvements how the manga stands having volleyball as one of its main themes. Before the hiatus, much of the volleyball stuff was skimmed over and even time-skips happened. I guess the mere fact that Asahi "rejects" Souta was emphasized is an indicator that the author wants to Souta to be a true powerhouse at volleyball; maybe to make him a much more irresistible partner for Asahi if ever the romance element is brought back in focus. I guess making him better in volleyball which will then make Asahi notice him more fall for him eventually is better than dropping in another girl (or harem of girls) just to make the romance element develop.
