I just explained to you why she's doing it, you're the one assuming this is a gender thing from 50 years ago. It's not. It's a family thing. Also, the girl is older than the boy, which puts slightly more responsibility on her by Japanese societal norms. And, as you're so keen to point out, times are changing, so she's breaking the mold a bit.

Besides, it's a nice heartfelt scene.
