Given that Haruto isn't visibly afraid for his own safety, the boss presumably isn't a threat to him. From that and the "Karma" name i would guess that it scales either in relation to the strength of the hero or the number of enemies the hero has defeated. In either case it could be a cake walk for Haruto while still being an insurmountable wall for Vernois.

Scaling boss? Just get better equips or spam items, they only scale to your base stats, not your total, so they're ALWAYS a bore.. Even worse when heirloom items are a thing and you can equip at a low lvl a set of gear meant for half way into the game or more..

If he bought final fantasy 4 when he was 17. Which came out in japan in 1991 and this manga is around of time of publication Haruto isnt in his mid 20s, but his mid 30s.
