i'd say it's all pretty justified. yeah soldiers die but he isn't needlessly cruel (no poison gas that causes lifelong damage) and only really kills soldiers. it's all good. definitely more justified than a nuke (even if that nuke resulted in less casualties overall)

If it's a valid military target then it's not a war crime.

Civilian deaths will occur in war, and there are actions any group can take to minimize it, but at the end of the day, safeguarding one's own citizens, friends and loved ones will end up taking priority.
