sifting through manga, it's getting really annoying to see a good looking cover, just to look at the description and see "blablabla is just an ordinary bla bla bla until his bla bla bla sudden girlfriend appearance/superpowers/whatever life flip turn upside down" and just immediately know the protagonist is going to be the most generic, unofensive, "put yourself in his shoes, boy!" and the entire story is going to be dragged through the mud for it.
Not to say it's always bad, but there's so much of it and sometimes you want something different right? that's what tags are about right? but there's no tag for the self-insert/cipher fantasy right? wouldn't it be nice to have right?

Sounds like a good way to start a tagging war. Everybody would be arguing that their favorite series isn't just self-insert wish fulfillment, it's fairly subjective what constitutes a "put yourself in his shoes, boy!" story, and there are so many stories that start with that premise it would be almost pointless to try tagging them all.

I feel your pain, though. It is pretty hard to find stories where the main character actually has a personality beyond "generic dude".
