Personally I'd prefer if they didn't become friends, but I don't think things are staying this way with Maki and Umi only. It's also going to cause drama later if Yuu finds out Umi and Maki have been friends for a while, but she got refused.

If he says yes, this opens a can of worms he doesn't want to deal with, being friends with her will 100% draw attention from everyone in school who's a fan of this girl. It's already happening even when they're not friends yet and will only get worse. I guess he's stuck between a rock and a hard place. Unless they get her to somehow agree to keep that friendship also a secret.

There are scenes in the WN where she had a feeling for him, but still unsure about it. But her epilogue at the end of LN vol 3 gives me the impression that she just want to have a love after seeing how happy Umi became after she started dating. Problem being she doesn't really have any other guy she is interested enough, and she can approach at her own pace (rather than the guy keep pushing her to hurry). The only guy close is Maki, but she doesn't seem like one who would try to steal her best friend's boyfriend.

Basketball arc gives development to Yuu. Her confrontation with Arae shows she is not just the princess who is nice to everyone, but can also be headstrong and voice her annoyance. This should be volume 4 story.

After that is the vacation story. Maki and Umi want to go on trip just for the two of them (and yes, they’re aware there’s big chance they might have sex as it’s just the two of them spending night together). Obviously their parents won’t let them. But as alternative, Umi’s mom will be visiting her in-law because her husband’s shore leave schedule is changed. So, she offered Maki and Umi to tag along. It seems to be a development arc for Riku, Umi’s unemployed brother, and his first love.

There next arcs are summer vacation. Saw comment about Yuu having a feeling for Maki, so it’s probably in this. Then the latest finished arc is sport festival, where rumors spread about Maki going out with Yuu.

Guessing from that, they probably have enough material for until volume 8 at least.

BTW, I forgot. Is Umi’s father in the army or navy?

He’s the showing by example why romcom protagonist are almost never a part of sport club. Practice and practice, no time for character interaction with the girls.

Ugh, the basketball arc was the absolute worst. I almost gave up on the WN altogether during it, it’s long, drawn out and kind of cringy hahaha. It’s long but just power through it though, it gets better once it’s over! I hope the author leaves it out of the LN.

When characters gets jealous and sad it hurts my heart this is why I kinda hate that I love reading romance/romcoms but I also love seeing characters blush because of small things like getting praised by someone they love.
