Maybe. But do not compare western audience and eastern. Even in Asia Japan is a weirdo of the family with their "comics" content. Japan is feminine, Korea is somewhere in the middle (leaning more to feminine) and China is opposite of Japan for the most part. (Their usual portrayal of MMC's)
So in fact Japs like this kind of stuff it especially resonates with hikikomoris who have virtual girlfriends.
