I don't remember seeing the orphanage scene from the single translated video comic version on YT. Then again, searching on YT using the kanji title of this manga brings up several more video comics in Japanese; considering that the source is a novel I guess there's really more to this story.

Wonder what's the deal with that one girl staring at them.

I'm trying to think of a polite way of referring to her and I think the best I can do is : a bit of a doormat with no real personality of her own. She doesn't seem to have a sense of self and changes her looks based upon what others want rather than what she wants. This is different than the eager to please sort of neglected personality disorder. It's more like she just has... nothing. No fire, no passion, no direction, and my mental voice for her is essentially flat and monotone....

I'm hoping this is intentional from the original writers perspective. But it really doesn't feel like she's even a real human. Just a robot doing what she's told and not seeming to have her own personality.

I dunno something about all of this has my heckles raised.

The other side of parental abuse: absolute control and constant shaving of self down to being a doll.

If someone like Euphilia from MagiRevo is desperate to meet/have expectations, this girl is someone where the parent just tell her how she must be and nothing else allowed.
Whatever dreams or desires she had were completely ignored in favor of what the parent want (such as her dyed hair)
Then when she got older it got replaced with desperately working to survive.

It's a rather common scene in stories where protagonist start out desperately trying to make ends meet while taking care of someone important (sick parent, younger sibling, etc)
When the story relieve them of that desperation usually by them earning lots of money in some way, they get to reflect and become aware that the person they are right now have no personal desire.

I feel like I am reading a propaganda manga about how great Japanase social comformity is...

Be part of the collective

Do not stick out

Reject uniqueness

Become a nail among many

Less the hammer strike you down
i feel what you mean
in fact was about to talk about how silly it was for teachers and students to target a meek loner
who doesnt hang out with the other gals in class (you can see it for a brief moment the gal side of class glared at her, juxtaposed with the boys blushing over her)
and she probably does a decent job studying if she's just an "average ordinary girl" ig i should have read 3 pages after... failing all courses huh...
-but ye this is just to make her into a big victim, b/c i assure you she didnt become pretty enough to get stared at like this from just changing her hair color
these are the types of common antics contrived in a 4-5/10 comic, its not the worst thing in the world but its floating around avg

buut
its honestly probably this author's view of the world
and wouldnt doubt if this was the world view of many
if it isn't fetishized (and i dont just mean hentai, kinda like how socially awkward girls have been used in manga from the past 7 or so years) this is how I'd assume many view it, well if manga was an indicator of the culture.

I can’t decide what is more annoying; her lack of personality or his overbearing ipsedixitisic ideas about the best way to fix everything.

It's not a lack of personality. She was literally abused to the point of trembling when she was late home to the MC's house. That shit fucks you up and no amount of playing house with a teenager can really help.

Does Japan not have like child services or something? Why aren't these guys going to the cops to report child abandonment? Surely the police could help find someone to take care of her.
