I still don't know if this supposed "Hero" is at least decent or another scumbag like the other.

You see him worrying about his injured classmates, and feeling shame that they were injured under his command. I'm going to say he's a decent guy, just struggling with the burden of command that was thrust on him without him really having any say in the matter.
