She's kind of like a parasite actually. But in her case she'll leech on to someone if that someone have the power to protect her from harm and that's Hirata. Hirata also have a story himself that made him sympathize with Karuizawa. And her being a bully/follow the bullies to not get bullied yourself attitude is actually very common. I can't blame her as I did that too.

This actually makes a lot more sense than it doesn't of anime in which it kind of just makes you assume that he knew this was the case from the beginning.

In this he was suspicious of it but had to confirm it and once he did it allowed him to implement his plans and win the exam in his own way.
