My guess is that the dragon soul has slowly corrupted him over time as well as potentially hero weapons have some degree of "ownership" to which anyone else using them will be susceptible to corruption. Dorel was likely convinced that killing his old friend might fix its "lock"

Dorei just wanted to test his power against his friend, the strongest hero he known. If Dorei defeats him then it prove that the legend is worthless and his path to magic is the correct one.
