If you notice, most fantasy stories nowadays treat magic as a science with "explanations". There are always energy sources, proven methodologies and, when the author has a brain, combinations of the magic field of study with chemistry, biology and physics fields.
It's rare to find a magic system that feels in fact magical. Like, in Lord of the Rings, old races like elves have special powers. For the elves it's a sort of art, science and religion, but since we never get the elven point of view, it ends up looking like an unnatural unknown power wielded by those ancient creatures with millennium wisdom. Thus, looks like magic.
