I've been pondering it a bit and I'm wondering if the bunny girl is keeping away not because she's a mutant but more because of her own feelings. She was quite enthusiastic about befriending Mei but because Mei is very nervous with people she doesn't show that same enthusiasm back which may have made the bunny girl feel a bit insecure in the friendship. Add on that finding out that Mei was hiding her race and didn't feel comfortable enough to share it with her beforehand may have been another blow. I can picture the story may show it as her feeling insecure/doubtful of their friendship.

That doesn't mean it's good for her to avoid Mei, but it might not necessarily be sinister.
