Possibly a leftover from chapter seven. That, or they died from refeeding syndrome (which I believe is more likely, if it was indeed sugar cane they were eating).

Kyou Machiko (the mangaka) probably had something specific in mind, but there really isn't enough information here for the reader to know.

Sugar cane was and is grown on Okinawa, so presumably a healthy Okinawan girl would recognize it. But those two girls were in poor physical and psychological condition.

It may have been poisoned sugar cane, which is sometimes placed in traps for vermin. The girls got that piece from a corvid that may have got it from such a trap.

Had to look up what refeeding syndrome was, and it sounds entirely possible. I never thought about it being poisoned for unwanted vermin either. Thank you both!

there's also the question of Mayu being a boy (as in literally biologically, not just she's flat chested)

I figured it could potentially have been rotten bones. At any rate... poor kids.
