I think this interaction highlights one of the major reasons why his relationship with his wife fell through, which was a lack of respect. His wife had utter disdain for anything he wanted to do, from gaming to sex, and it seemed that she cared more about the status that came with him being a doctor than anything else (at least that's the vibe I got from her wanting to "stay" with him till her promotion worked out). It's fine to not like something your SO does, but you can do that respectfully and show that you don't think of them less because of doing that thing. His wife brought this divorce on herself by treating him like shit for merely expressing his desires.
