For example, Gochiusa (https://mangadex.org/title/12661).
The chapters released in magazines have no chapter numbers associated with them at all. When released in tankoubon volumes, they get numbered only within the volume.
In official sources, the chapters already released in volumes are referred to by a combination of volume number and chapter number inside the volume (ref: https://comic-fuz.com/series/1474), and chapters not yet released in volumes are not referred to anywhere in any way other than "this month's chapter" (as far as I could see).
That doesn't really go well with Mangadex's system. Numbering them with a combination of the volume and inter-volume number does kind of work, but the system still assumes the numbers are contiguous between volumes at some places, like the "chapters read" counter and the "missing chapters" tab, and who knows where else something could fail.
And what about the chapters that haven't been released in volumes yet? One could use the same workaround by setting the volume field to the next number and numbering the new chapters from 1 again, but the chapters are often rearranged in the volume, and it would go against the guideline "For chapters not (yet) released in volumes, leave the volume number empty." And using the summed total number would give a hundred "missing chapters", confusing readers.
Would leaving the volume field empty and restarting numbering from 1 still show them on the top?
Should all chapters be re-numbered contiguously for Mangadex use? That would solve most technical problems, but it would also go against official sources, and many fans already used to the per-volume numbering would surely complain.
