Contraceptive pills were only legalized in 1999 in Japan, and emergency pills in 2011. It's far less popular in Japan than in most other developped country. IUD are not very popular either. You could say that "condom or nothing" is a cliche not too far from reality (yeah, that sucks)

Condoms are a form of contraception too. Some might say the most primary kind. Though I suppose there are people who use the term only to refer to the medication.
