The shifting method described in this chapter is sometimes called "floating" the gears. This video (at the timestamp, 8:37) should demonstrate it well for those who need visuals to understand. It's for trucks but the concept is basically the same.

floating, if done right, wont hurt the gearbox. and if done not right, well its gonna chip two or three gears, which isnt that much of a problem.
