this actually happened once in Vietnam btw. A famous author whose work is in the literature text book got asked by his son to write an essay about his own work, and that essay was graded a 5 with comment from the teacher "you didn't understand the author's intentions" XD

Literature has its way of gaining new meaning every time it's read. The author's intention no longer matters as soon as another person reads the written word.

But at the same time, that dean is pretty stupid for not allowing any criticism. That's not how you make progress. He fails as an academic.
