+1 omegaverse is not yaoi/BL. There are heterosexual omegaverse stories so it doesn't fall into the yaoi or BL category o.o And guys giving birth to kids is not exactly what people associate with BL/yaoi.

I've been thinking about this one for a while and I don't have a strong opinion as such as to whether we should have one. But I do have strong feelings about why we should or shouldn't.

@Nako:

Whilst I technically agree with you from what I've heard of omegaverse stuff in western fan-fiction (and I know some of the premise conventions have stuff that does woobly-third-gender stuff for girls, too, not just the guys), I personally have not seen a single omegaverse manga, on this site, that is not BL. (It's possible I've missed something). And both the origins and the major following is still strongly associated with BL, to my knowledge, even in the west? But, to be fair, I'm sure someone can dig up some straight omegaverse manga if they're sufficiently determined. Surely there should be some yuri somewhere there too.

Yet I must say male-pregnancy is generally a BL thing. I may not think of m-preg when I think of yaoi, but the converse is true: I definitely think of BL when m-preg is mentioned. I can't think of many exceptions that aren't played-for-laughs. (I'm sure there's a niche following somewhere, but...)

....Honestly, pretty much all the m-preg I've seen in yaoi is either omegaverse or beast-men stuff, for whatever reason. I don't know what that's about. Anyway.

Having said that! None of the demographic-associations with these things should pose any issue for this site, which, y'know, made a tag for "monster girls". Or so I would have thought... (Or, if the argument is something mumbled about things that are mostly sub-genres—as a previous poster said, the "villainess" tag belies that).

If I'm being quite honest, the genre-based reasoning feels just a tiny bit to me like, "most guys won't run in to the need for this tag, so no". With fancy reasoning thrown on top. (Do note, for good or ill on my part, I am known to be vocally dubious about how un-awarely bro-culture a good portion of the site, and frequently the admins too, are sometimes.) But I may be being unfair this time.

Anyway.

The one reasonable argument for not having the tag, given the context of existing tags, from where I'm sitting, is that there aren't that many omegaverse manga (merely scores of them of at most)

Yet, given how fiercely polarizing omegaverse stuff is (it's pretty much either "yes! yes! yes! more please!" or "no! no! no! ew no!"), I'd want to give it a much higher priority than some other niche-ish tags.... (And, it has some other things going for it, such as it's very well-defined...) On the other hand we don't, for instance, have most fetish tags (vore, etc), which would I suppose have somewhat the same argument for them... ugh.

Having said all that, I, personally, happen to want less tags on this site, or a cleaner tagging system where stuff like this is in the equivalent of mangadex's "categories". (The "genre/theme" separation we have right now is not remotely equivalent, especially given what's in each one, and how they're presented...)

...But whatever I feel about that, in the context of what has been given tags already, the standard applied here seems inconsistent. The argument for having an Omegaverse tag—after reaching some threshold of number of manga pertaining to it, whatever that is—seems quite sound.

Right now, authors and publishers are cashing in on the Omegaverse trend so it's pretty obvious which ones are not from the cover, title, and/or summary. Like, they really hammer it down that it's Omegaverse. MU would be sufficient if you really want to look for it while filtering it won't take a few seconds of checking said cover, title, and/or summary.

This doesn't quite hold water to my experience in a couple ways; as someone who reads yaoi and doesn't really want to read omegaverse (for reasons), I've been blindsided at least three times. I've tried to add "Note: Omegaverse" to the summary when that happens, which is a workable workaround—but that doesn't encourage new series to be thus-adorned.

(To be clear, I've got nothing against people liking omegaverse stuff, and it has at most just been an annoyance for me, "okay, nevermind, I guess I'm not reading this one". I'm just saying.)

* * *

Finally, my not-serious proposal for how we could handle it in the meantime: Make a blank series with no chapters called "Omegaverse", and just series-associate it as "shared universe" with every omegaverse series. :'p

@Pokari

I personally have not seen a single omegaverse manga, on this site, that is not BL

Lemme fix that for you:

- Omegaverse hetero couple: Gokudou to Omega
- Omegaverse yuri couple: Kantai Collection -KanColle- Ameagari no Hanayome
- there are even omegaverse stories about children: Dear Us (on LINE Webtoon though, to be fair)

(took me less than 5 minutes to find them lol)

Yet I must say male-pregnancy is generally a BL thing

I tend to call it an omegaverse thing. At least I haven't seen a yaoi with m-preg other than omegaverse stuff. (I'm not an avid reader of either of both genres/tags but a story with m-preg was my first introduction to omegaverse and it was very confusing. It's also a very prevalent theme in omegaverse as there's a group of males who can get pregnant and thus you often see them have kids even if pregnancy itself is not featured in the story)

most guys won't run in to the need for this tag, so no

Tbh, I felt like this was the main reason why people were against a bara tag. Just because yuri is aimed at hetero males and homo females it doesn't mean that the same is true for yaoi. But the argument that homo males could just read yaoi was pretty much based on the argument "homo females read yuri" which is not really valid as yuri and yaoi work different when it comes to origin (e.g. gender of mangaka) and content and thus target audience.
It's a shame that MD is somewhat ignorant towards such differences.

The one reasonable argument for not having the tag, given the context of existing tags, from where I'm sitting, is that there aren't that many omegaverse manga (merely scores of them of at most)

There are quite a few according to Baka-Updates though. Number of vore entries on BU is way lower than it is for omegaverse. And as was mentioned before, there's a samurai tag in MD and that one hasn't many entries either (100+). (And there's other stuff like "Medical" - 149 titles, "Magical Girls" - 143, "Philosophical" - 172, "Superhero" - 172.)

*edit: Not sued yet. But if copyright abuser takes action to respond, it's frivolous lawsuit time.

I don't even read BL stuff, but I read enough fanfiction (smutty or otherwise) to know how much of a massive pain it is to get omegaverse when you're not explicitly looking for it.

If we do get the tag, I'd also recommend "A/B/O" (or something like A|B|O if the slashes are an issue), short for "Alpha/Beta/Omega", as a tag name, so that the tag doesn't take up too much space in the taglist. It's a frequent enough tag for the subject on other sites that I think it'd be recognizable and understandable here.

omg this thread just keeps coming back you'd think that after 9 months of no response from the staff these people would get the hint it's not happening.

I don't really understand what the harm of adding more tags would be. Even if most users won't have any use for this one, elaborate tagging system are basically always more convenient than simpler ones.

Only if it is accompanied by a better system, or else it will be a hassle just to find your tags.
Can I just I type in a tag and get what I want? No, you can't on MD. Finding 1 in 80 tag is certainly easier than finding it in 100 or more tags.

Then MD can just upgrade their system no? Good luck with that. They are having their hands full now fyi.

@MavB_Ver If you open the drop down menu and type the tag you want it takes you to it automatically. At least my browser does.

I've just gotta say, after running into yet another BL series with surprise omegaverse in it tonight, I'm really starting to wish we had a tag... >_>;

Like, yes, this is only the third or fourth time this has happened to me; on the other hand: This is the third or fourth time this has happened to me.

@Nako:

Putting the rest of everything aside, I'd just like to say I'm old enough to know that M-preg was distinctly a thing in western BL fan-fiction a good while before it spawned the omegaverse.

I am given to understand that its popularity did increase significantly with the introduction of alpha/beta/omega stuff, though. Most of my knowledge of this topic, it should be said, is all secondhand from my sisters over the years... I'm pretty strictly a manga person and was completely baffled when omegaverse stuff started showing up here XD But I can say with great certainty that I knew what mpreg was before the shows whose fandoms spawned the omegaverse even existed. >_> They are definitely fully separable concepts.

Adding that the frequency with which omegaverse stuff is appearing appears to be continuing to slowly accelerate, as of the present time.

If the trend continues, at some point I may have to change my position from "I can see both sides of this argument," to "the only good argument against it is all the disturbed screaming that would come from most of the boys on the site once they realized what the tag meant".

(Guys aren't used to being the objects of people's weird specific sexual fantasies, for better or for worse. It seems fair play to me given that we have a tag like "monster girls", but...)
