@Simply_Fiction Flora's sketchbook was clearly more than a simple sketchbook. She said Oscar stealing it ruined her life, and she worked so hard on the content in it that most of her fingers were bandaged. That suggests it contained the work for a final project or something similar, not just drawings/paintings she did on her own. I suspect it was her portfolio for the college she got a scholarship from. I could see the scholarship being contingent on her portfolio being submitted, then being awarded to someone else when Flora couldn't do so.
Just because it's being called a sketchbook in the story doesn't mean it's insignificant.
