Oof, not sure if this is the end or there will be some kind of turnaround, but sometimes after raising a wild eldritch horror of fluffy friendship the time does come where it must return to its own home dimension. But maybe Flora's connection to Creepy will give her another path...

You could well be right about the author not having everything planned out at the start. Then again, it wouldn't be weird if there have been waves of creepies who found a way into their world or were summoned over the ages, and some of them ended up going native. Maybe these ones are relatively [original] and actually want to go back, while others like the mercats do not (or have lost their connection entirely).
