it says 分艦隊 (lit. partial fleet). 分艦隊 is something smaller than a fleet according to https://www.weblio.jp/content/分艦隊 , but it doesn't seem like a common word or phrase in japanese. It exists in chinese as "squadron" (https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/分舰队) but in japanese all the occurences I find are from games or manga. The first link and first google result is from a LoGH glossary...

Maybe the term was explained in the manga/novel itself to mean exactly half a fleet though, but even then I would have probably mapped it to a better sounding word

EDIT: going down the rabbithole, at least the Imperial Japanese fleets in WW2 didn't use this word for their squadrons. they used 戦隊 instead or even just the ~隊 suffix: https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/第一艦隊_(日本海軍)

Welcome to the joys of working on this manga. Part of the fun is trying to work out exactly wtf they are saying. But yeah per the baronh (Abh Japanese) lexicon, it's a partial or half-fleet. Went with half-fleet cause reasons and here we are.

Its your scans your call, but words like squadron, division etc are already abstract enough in that they can mean anything at all. Across different militaries, across the same military at different times. So since they're blank words already you might as well use them too, noone expects a standardized meaning from them. If the source material explains what exactly a "half-fleet" consists of you can throw it in a TL-note, but even the japanese readers probably dont know what it means specifically. It's not a japanese word, see my other post above.

Yep cause they're speaking baronh, the language the author invented. Half-fleet (or partial-fleet, hell there's even sub-fleet) is the accepted translation for ïadbyrec. That's the word we're translating, not 分艦隊. As for an actual definition of it? Well good hunting finding a source. Novels don't even go into any detail so have to rely on third-party sources that may or may not be accurate.

Actually surprised the word salad on page 18 didn't gain more traction. That's totally a 'Jesus take the wheel' moment.

Probably not, at least in my language we have similar words, like dziesiętnik and setnik, meaning ten-man-commander and hundred-man-commander. They're old shit but legit enough so if you use them in novel you don't have to add index explaining them.
