this is a little calculative, but the empress's death makes things hit more realistically. it's not a feel-good, being-OP-gets-you-everything story.
the futility of the empress's death is profound- she could have been saved! she wouldn't have been a bargaining chip! it's so frustrating! but then we think about her and her context. the 2nd prince waited a long time before deciding it was worth it to save her. there was also no MC Kasia before the empress died. the empress was captive, after suffering abuse, not only separated from her only joy and reason for living but also being used against him. she made a very human decision. human decisions aren't always rational or streamlined for success. this story gives you that depth of emotion.
@angry_noodles I completely agree with you. I love the fact that this is grounded and not an "OP Hero-Messiah Saves the Empire" type of story.
The Emperess's death teaches us the readers and the characters themselves that this is not a fairy tale with a happy ending and that we (they) should wise up and stop being naïve. I am quite inquisitive on how these characters will grow and evolve as the story progresses, especially Kasia. I want her to free herself from the past and find happiness (the prince looks like a good match).
The emotions and memories evoked by the Empress's death show that she is much more than a simple "machine" and that's me character development than many mangas and novels I've read recently.
