Any chance we can split this into separate male/female specific tags? Their appeal and I feel more often than not their roles in a narrative are completely distinct and should be treated as such.

No from me, we shouldn't break up a tag that already covers both topics. If we do it'll set a precedent were people will request to break up more tags for even more niche reasons.

I don't feel like crossdressing is that prevalent of a trope in manga to warrant this split. If it's something like isekai and otome, I kinda get it, but this doesn't really make sense to me.

Crossdressing is crossdressing whether it's by a male or a female. We would have to split genderswap by direction as well if we made a change like this, although I can appreciate the distinction of content when it improves search capabilities. I have a hard time thinking about series that focus on girls crossdressing as boys or girls turning into boys though. Quantity of content is a big consideration when we add new tags, I think this might be a bit too niche.
